A Caricature

he has a great eye for light and shadow amongst other things, i just wanted to create something on par. hope he digs it. peace!

Some Graffiti

so i made a facebook, and one of the main attractions is this Graffiti program they have. its a quick sketch software that just allows brush width, opacity, and color. i've had the account for about a month or so and i find that painting little things for people is really fun. it gives me a reason to make these little images for other peoples pleasure. they range from 30 min to 2 hours. i try to keep them organic and mostly focus on color.

So this is the product of creativity, affection, and a general state of disarray. It was originally intended as a gift. The piece over time came to represent my inner peace, which in the end i really didn't feel like parting with. It's really rewarding to make something traditional though, i can hold it, smell it and mess it up. Originally I intended to make it out of col-erase colored pencils, but then added some water color. I regret the water color, but only because the paper wasn't really meant to have water on it. The next one I make will probably be on watercolor paper... sweet.

Its Been Forever

dang, life has been busy, which is good. finally feel like i'm getting on track of things. anyway, i got a new job which is pretty damn fun, and i'm tryin to get school work done. here are some trees from my last sketchbook done w/ good ole crayola markers. just grey and black though, i added a little green filter in photoshop for the hell of it. peace.

so i enjoyed the results from "scarf chic" and wanted to expand upon the idea of rendered elements within less rendered elements. i think the piece came out well, i'd say the biggest challenge was making sure that it all worked well together. i enjoy the grays.

haven't posted in a while. i've been painting more and more actually but finish few things. I'll start something, paint it for awhile get bored with the colors and'll want to move to something else. i've been learning so much, but from the outside looking in I would guess I appear unproductive. LOL *shrug

created on the fly. my friend handed me a piece of plywood and i saw an image that resembled this for about a second. the next couple of days were spent trying to bring the image to life. 12"X24" plywood, sharpies, colored pencils.

finally got around to doing this pitchbook. been setting deadlines and assignments. lol which sucks cuz that would mean this was due 3 days ago. anyway, i though it came out alright. i like it actually. good way to introduce people into the world i'm about to co-create.

so i did this as an activity for a forum that i frequent. it took me forever to think of a decent pose. i'm sort of new at rendering with marker and still feel my colors come out way too saturated so i tried to make the line work as interesting as possible. blah, i'll do better next time.

i'd consider Hokusai a master. so this is a master study. done in good ole marker for fun. this is probably one of my favorite prints of his. i dig it better than "the great wave"

the same idea as with the scarf chic, but i feel the over all piece wasn't executed as well. though the rendered images lead the eye through the composition i don't like the way it came out. i do, however, feel the figure itself is better drawn. as far as this one goes i learned more about what not to do, rather than what to do. its learning eitherway, flash gave me some pretty nice lines on this one. i'll try to continue the trend.

Scarf chic fun

just wanted to render a scarf. something fun and quick in order to see what kind of progress i'd made because of the studies. i've learned! i've learned! lol, its a lot easier rendering cloth when thinking in terms of volumes. paint allows me to do this. included the flash sketch for feces and giggles.

Raven Studies

after the rainbow explosion that was the poison dart frogs i wanted to paint an animal that was more monochromatic. my dnd character has a raven familiar so the answer was obvious. as always i was amazed but the colors that made up these studies. quite different from painting the frogs, for one i really didn't to use any hard brushes and mostly relied on soft ones. the subtly of color was a lot harder to convey but learned some new things in the process. these things really take on the color of their environments. all in all i'd say about 2 hours per bird. there are things here and there i could have changed but the point isn't to get these exactly the same as the photographs. mainly i was trying to familiarize myself with rendering feathers, also the facial and anatomical features of these beautiful creatures.

Initial Character Designs

the title explains it all. i apologize for the horrible presentation but i just wanted to get these up so i could show my partners in crime. i took in some of the information from the last post about the show, but now had to think about what they were actually going to wear. the designs seems a bit redundant to me but slowly i'm figuring out who these characters are. so in time they'll start to look like their own people. there were a couple things i liked, but a lot of things i didn't. oh well, the longest journey starts with the smallest step. the poses look so static too, i'll have to make them more dynamic next time. blah! ............................................................................................
now that i look at these, they look really generic. i have to start putting in more cultural influences so you can tell that they all hail from different lands. just initial designs sal... just initial designs...

The Problem with Digital Photos

So i was taking a look through my book on the masters. The image of Titians portrait has a way better color range and loads more detail in the book. I don't have a big enough scanner to scan in the page, otherwise i would have loved to use it instead of the crappy internet image i found. Oh well, i'll just have to be careful about where i get my images from in the future.

Titian Study

i chose to study a master this time around. holy crap this thing was challenging. it took quite a bit of time, most of it devoted to the face. it was very difficult getting the likeness and the expression. the face had to work or the whole thing would be a failure. that being said, i learned a great deal from this piece. it was a humbling experience trying to emulate a master. i added some noise and a despeckle filter in order to get rid some of the "digital" look. photoshop is quite versatile :) next i think i might do a study from the sistine cieling.

Brizzles birthday card

done in flash, text added in photoshop. what does this mean? well i can take a couple stabs at it, but when i thought about designing a quick birthday card for my buddy, this is what came to mind. he likes boobs so i addes some clevage, i like birds, and this was the result.

Frog Studes

hadn't played with photoshop for a while and after the vector bg i really wanted to play with pixels again. this time around i chose to study poison dart frogs, i'm fascinated by the colors of nature and finding beauty in thing that some people find "slimey" or "creepy". oddly enough when i first started this, photoshop crashed and i lost about 2 hours of work. as a result i had to paint the green one twice, but now when i look it at, the green one, blue one, and yellow one are my favorites. i didn't focus on drawing them out before hand i just worked with color and went from there. i only used one brush and just started applying dots of color where i saw fit. the only thing i varied were brush hardness, opacity, and flow.

learned a lot on this one. figured i'd show the steps in the process. the thing i'm most unhappy with is the color. its good to know i can still do these perspective drawings, i'm so used to doing landscapes now, i definitely prefer more organic shapes. more work to come! i miss photosohop!

I'm Laggin It

can't say i've been super busy, just slacking. but slowly i'm lifting myself out of this funk i've been in for a while now. anyway, i just did a whole bunch of thumbs today for fun. drawing lanscapes tends to relax me, while structural stuff requires a bit more thought. they started off rather stale but i got more comfortable and some actually turned out okay. i expect to post a lot more in the coming week.

a lot of these are warm up pages before i start drawing "seriously". ... LOL... anyway, sorry for the sloppy presentation but its how you'd see them everyday. i do try to gear them toward a theme though. Most of them are designs and redraws of the Crimson King, the bad guy and nemesis of the characters for the show. Enjoy... the mileage...

THE SHOW!

so these are the main characters for a show i'm trying to make. its pretty much DnD meets Half-Baked. A young group of rag tag, but strong, characters journey through a world full of magic, peril, and exotic flora. These designs are by no means final and to be honest they started as solitary portraits but i decided to add some expressions. Hence the lack of unifying design, eh i'll get over it. I do like some of the expressions and fine some funny. The challenge was only working with contrast, a fun excercise.

a friend asked me to do some concepts for him. he needed futuristic looking cockroaches that had evolved over millions of years due to radiation. well i wasn't really sure how roaches looked so i took the time to do these studies.
